I was looking for a basic black and white printer for my small office and Brother had some good write ups. After trawling the net for an afternoon, the HL-5240 looked like a good candidate.
As a Vista user, compatibility was a concern, but I needn’t have worried as the drivers are all on the website. The HL-5240 has all the features that You need in a monochrome printer. It has a half decent printing speed, at almost 30 pages per minute for a text document at 1200 dpi maximum resolution. Paper handling is taken care of with a standard paper tray holding up to 250 pages.
Our workload includes graphics printing besides the multitude of documents and I have yet to have any difficulty with the printer. My demands are high with regards both quality and quantity and so far the printer hasn’t let me down. If it could write the stuff for me as well as print it, it might well be the perfect printer for me!
Printers need to have a simple user interface otherwise they become a liability instead of an asset. The Brother HL-5240 has a one-touch control panel and a large, clear “stop printing” button. This is great for people like me that often have to stop printing when I see a typo or a mistake as I’m watching the prints. My fault for not proofreading properly, but I’m used to the way I work now.
While not the most obvious benefit of a printer, cooling is also not an issue with the HL-5240. My previous printer had a chronic overheating problem which gave me no-end of problems when printing large jobs. Energy efficiency and better airflow has enabled Brother HL-5240 to overcome these issues, much to my relief. It comes with a TN550 toner cartridge, a DR520 drum unit, set up instructions and guidelines to make looking after it as easy as possible. The cartridges are simple to swap out, and fairly cheap at online retailers.
Brother HL-5240 is great for small businesses and freelancers that don’t need to print a lot of extensive graphics or images. That isn’t to detract from the printer, as an Inkjet is still the way to go for graphics intensive applications.
I am more than satisfied with the performance of Brother HL-5240 and there have been no issues so far. I would recommend it to others who need something simple but effective.
