The printed image — both text and graphics — is actually composed of microscopic ink dots. The colour quality and sharpness of the image is determined by a number of factors - the quantity and size of the dots, how precisely they are placed, how they are combined to create colours, as well as the quality of the ink and how well it bonds to the paper or film. Some printer manufacturers make claims that their technology produces better print quality simply by adding more dots-per-inch (dpi).
