HP LaserJet Pro M451 Review

Overview
If your small or medium sized business is looking for a printer, then look no further than the HP LaserJet Pro M451. It will make the perfect addition to your company. This printer possesses wireless connectability which allows users to print wirelessly from a mobile device. The printouts that this machine produces show a professional quality that you will be proud to give to even your most important clients.

Pros
This printer is a little too large to sit on a standard size desk, being its dimensions are 15.9 inches wide, 17.9 inches deep, and 12.7 inches high, weighing in at over 50 pounds. However, it will do fine residing on a sturdy shelf or table.

21 pages per minute will be produced by this printer, in both color and black & white. This is the perfect speed for any small or medium print jobs.

With 600 X 600 dpi resolution, this printer produces high quality, professional printouts. The graphics and logos will look very clean. Business documents this top-notch would be perfect to hand out at a meeting.
The M451 has a paper tray that holds up to 300 sheets. There’s 250 sheets for the input tray and 50 sheets for the multipurpose tray. An additional tray can also be purchased to bring your total up a 550 sheet capacity. This will be plenty big for most all of your printing needs.

A 2-line 16 character LCD display is offered on the control panel. This makes for configuring your printing jobs fairly easy. Troubleshooting is also a cinch as well. The control panel has 5 buttons: the up arrow, the down arrow, cancel job, back, and select. There are two led lights that say either attention or ready.

The HP LaserJet M451 allows you to print on both sides of the paper with automatic duplexing. This is super environment-friendly, cutting down on paper and costs.

The recommended duty cycle by the manufacturer is 40,000 pages. Recommended monthly pages are up to 2,000.

Software is included with the printer, consisting of HP ePrint, Auto off/on technology, Smart Install and Apple AirPrint.

Hardware and software can be installed pretty quickly and you can be printing within an hour, making this a super simple printer to get set up.

Cons
One pitfall of the HP LaserJet Pro M451 is that only prints at a speed of  21 pages per minute. This is considerably slow in comparison to other models on the market of the same printer class, which usually print at a speed of 25 pages per minute, some even up to 30 pages.

250 sheets in the paper tray is also considered small.  It can be expanded, which is good, but when a lot of offices go through more than 1,000 pages a day, it makes it seem like you are constantly filling up the paper tray again and again.

HP LaserJet 4650dn

The HP LaserJet 4650dn is the latest member of the 4600 family. It features a faster print speed, faster processor, built-in duplexing and network connectivity. It’s designed for workgroups who value high volume printing and require good quality output.

The rest of the 4650 stable contains the 4650, the base model with no networking capability, the 4650n which has networking and a JetDirect print server. This allows control over the network or internet via a browser, even using HTTPS for secure access. There is also the option to go wireless or Bluetooth with an optional card. There is also the 4650hdn, which adds a 20Gb hard drive to its duplexing and networking capabilities.

The printer is neither small nor light, but is typical of its class. The four toner cartridges are readily accessed from the front, which makes maintenance easier. It also means there’s no fiddling around at the back or sides trying to access the cartridges like some other models we could mention.

The front LCD panel menus and buttons are clearly labeled making it easy to navigate. You can quickly print out the status page and obtain the IP address for the printer if youre on a DHCP-enabled network. It also provides an indication of the toner levels if you so desire.

The resolution of 600 by 600 dpi can be enhanced using HPs ImageRet 3600. This is a proprietary printing technology that improves the quality of prints through some software jiggery pokery. The prints we tested were decent, with no complaints on the mono printing. The print speeds on a range of text files were around 21 pages per minute. Color prints were also equally good, with an acceptable level of detail within the image.

The 500 sheet paper tray, 100 sheet bypass and output tray on top ensures the printer continues working, whatever the queue. The automatic duplexer works flawlessly and ensures double-sided printing is as easy as single. For higher workloads, I would suggest the 4050hdn, as print jobs can be loaded onto the hard drive to be processed while you’re doing something else. There is also a further 2 500 sheet paper drawers with it to ensure you never run out of paper, however large the job.

The HP LaserJet 4650dn is a workhorse printer. It’s an often used phrase, but is too apt for this not to use. It’s solidly built, well designed and prints quickly and well.
